The Gaines Scholarship Fund

The Gaines Scholarship Fund was established to honor the memory of Coach “Big House” Gaines. Coach Gaines coached the Winston-Salem State Rams for 47 years compiling a record of 828-447 making him one of the most successful college basketball coaches of all time. A member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, Coach Gaines guided the Rams to eighteen 20-win seasons, eight CIAA titles, and to a Division II NCAA National Championship in 1967.

Off the court, Coach Gaines was a pillar in the community, serving many professional and civic organizations, including Reynolda Rotary where he was a charter member.

The Gaines Scholarship Fund was established by Reynolda Rotary in his honor. The fund’s purpose is to provide financial assistance to the alumni of Cook School to attend Winston-Salem State University. Two Gaines Scholars have completed their studies at WSSU and another one is currently attending WSSU.

These scholarships are exclusively funded by the annual “Big House” Gaines Golf Tournament. Donations to the Fund and golf tournament sponsors are welcomed. Please inquire by either emailing Lynn Ebert ebertl@wfu.edu or calling Lynn 336 758-5412.
